Biological Burden Index (BBI) in Pet Facilities
Historically, environmental programs have often been designed around the size of a facility. Square footage remains an important consideration, but it provides only part of the picture. A 10,000-square-foot facility housing 30 dogs does not experience the same environmental pressure as a 10,000-square-foot facility housing 180 dogs. The primary driver of environmental burden is not simply the size of the building — it is the level of biological activity occurring within it.
"Two facilities of identical size may experience dramatically different environmental demands"

The Biological Burden Index provides a practical estimate of the environmental pressure experienced within an animal care facility.
BBI does not directly measure biological burden; rather, it estimates the operational conditions that contribute to it by combining two of its primary drivers — the average number of animals occupying the facility and the percentage of available capacity being utilized. Much like Body Condition Scores in veterinary medicine, its value lies not in perfect precision, but in consistency, practicality, and usefulness. BBI is an operational index intended to support facility classification and environmental management. It is not a predictor of disease risk, and it does not replace direct environmental measurement.

Is your facility effectively managing the biological burden of your environment?
BBI exists to answer a practical question:
What will this facility require? It is the basis on which monitoring and environmental-management resources are scaled and an individual program is estimated.
